YouCitizen Blogpost — Narratives of citizenship: belonging versus deserving

Dan Hammett, University of Sheffield and a Senior Research Fellow on the YouCitizen Project, has written a new blog post exploring competing notions of belonging and deserving in contemporary narratives of citizenship. This piece confronts the pressing question of how normative frameworks of what makes a ‘good citizen’ are enrolled to bolster particular political projects. In particular, Dan draws attention to the xenophobic violence in South Africa unleashed against migrant workers, events that have challenged more inclusive stories of citizenship that have circulated in the post-Apartheid era.
